Visit Northampton County on the Web
Northampton County, Virginia has the distinction of being one of the earlier settlements in our nation’s history. Settled in 1614, the county is surrounded on one side by the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay on the other. This rural county has retained its pastoral beauty and its leisurly pace to this day. With its saltwater bays, marshes and numerous creeks, the county is one of the few unspoiled coastal areas on the Eastern Seaboard. Recreation for all ages abounds--deep water fishing, crabbing and shell fishing, camping, boating, sunbathing, biking, canoeing, kayaking and bird watching are just a few of the natural joys available. The county boasts many homes of varied vintage from ante-bellum to Victorian to Sears Roebuck houses and its towns and fishing villages charm all who visit them. Nature Conservancy tours of barrier islands are available by prior arrangement and a federal wildlife refuge offers nature walks on the sea-side marshes. Northampton county is a comforting place to visit or to live, whatever your age.

An easy drive from many metropolitan areas of the East and only 20 miles from Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Northampton County offers that rare treasure--peace. Many who visit us decide to become part of our history by settling among us; others return regularly for restoring respites. All are touched by the special qualities of our county and cherish their memories of Northampton County and the Eastern Shore.
