The Town of Nassawadox straddles U.S. Route 13 about 5 miles south of the Northampton-Accomack County line. The name, which is American Indian for 'Land Between Two Waters', originally referred to a much larger area bordering on Nassawadox Creek. In the 1600's, there was the Quaker-built Nassawadox Meeting House and in the 1700's the Nassawadox Tobacco Warehouse. It wasn't until 1884 with the coming of the railroad that the present location of Nasswadox began to emerge.

John T. Rogers, whose land bordered the new railroad, started building a store beside the tracks before the first train ever ran. This store was to remain in operation for the next 100 years. Even though the railroad did not originally plan a depot at this spot, thanks to Mr. Rogers by 1886 Upshur Station and Village existed. On March 17, 1886 the U.S. Post Office opened in Mr. Roger's store and the name of the Town was officially changed to Nassawadox.

Throughout the years Nassawadox has grown and changed. The two most significant changes being the building of U.S. Route 13 through the Town and the building of Shore Memorial Hospital (originally known as the Northampton-Accomack Memorial Hospital). The hospital was the dream of Dr. William J. Sturgis who, with the incredible efforts of the Franktown-Nassawadox Ladies Auxiliary, caused this dream to become a reality. On August 17, 1928 NAM Hospital admitted its first patient. Since then a large medical community has grown up around the hospital to serve the needs of the citizens of the Eastern Shore.

Incorporated in 1958, the Town of Nassawadox is a pleasant, friendly community of about 600. The Town offers a number of businesses and services that provide for many of the needs of the Eastern Shore. Please come and visit us.
