POINTS OF INTEREST

CAPE CHARLES
This well planned town is the largest in the county. It offers a commercial center with shops, restaurants, antiques, museum, medical services, churches of many denominations, public beach, golf, harbor, marinas, boat ramp, sport fishing, summer rentals, B&B accommodations and the last remaining rail-barge in the country which regularly crosses the Chesapeake Bay to Norfolk.

CHERITON
Shopping, medical services, churches, and B&B accommodations. Located nearby are excellent camping facilities.

CHESAPEAKE BAY BRIDGE TUNNEL
This 17.6 mile complex spans the mouth of Chesapeake Bay providing a shorter and less congested north-south route while letting the traveler marvel at an engineering wonder. A tourist center located on the south island of the crossing offers the traveler a restaurant, souvenirs, observation points and fishing pier.

CUSTIS TOMB
The burial place of John Custis is located at the end of Route 644.

EASTERN SHORE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
Established by the U.S. Department of the Interior and open to the public. Exhibits and nature trails are available. The Visitors Center is located just off Route 600 near the entrance to the Bridge Tunnel.

EASTVILLE
Established about 1715 as the county seat. A charming court house green invites the visitor to explore the surrounding buildings. The oldest continuous court records in the nation (dating from 1632) are preserved here and can be viewed by the visitor. There are B&B accommodations and restaurant.

EXMORE
Second largest town in the county is a commercial center with shopping, restaurants, antiques, railway museum, B&B and motel accommodations and churches.

EYRE HALL
Built in 1750 - Beautiful and rare boxwood gardens open to the public. The family grave yard and the ruins of an orangery are here. This historic home is open during Garden Week in April.

HUNGARS CHURCH
Built in 1742 - This Episcopal Congregation still uses the communion service that was presented by John Custis IV of Northampton County and Williamsburg.

KIPTOPEKE STATE PARK
Situated on the Chesapeake Bay three miles north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel on Route 13, is a mecca for nature lovers. The Park is a stopover for migrating birds and has a banding station, fishing pier, boat ramp, guarded swimming beach, camping facilities and picnic area.

NASSAWADOX
Shopping, restaurants, collectible shop and the location of Shore Memorial Hospital. Nearby, in Brownsville, is the Nature Conservancy headquarters for the Eastern Shore.

OYSTER
Quaint fishing village with modern boat ramp. Located nearby is the Long Term Ecological Research Laboratory of the University of Virginia.

SMITH ISLAND
Named by Captain John Smith in 1608, now the site of the Cape Charles lighthouse which is the most powerful of the Virginia lights.

WILLIS WHARF
Small fishing village with restaurant, public dock, marina, B&B accommodations and boat ramp.
