Construction began on The Port of Cape Charles Sustainable Technologies Industrial Park, America's first eco-industrial park, in October 1996. Lands acquired for the Park contain a system of permanently protected natural areas, including the Coastal Dune Natural Area Preserve overlooking the Chesapeake Bay. The Park is designed to complement Cape Charles' historic grid pattern and architectural character. Other features of the Sustainable Technologies Park include a teleconference center, walk and bike trail systems, and a business development center.
